People are very complicated, we all have different tastes, behave differently, etc etc. With me personally, finding out someone feels the way I do about them, I don't know any other way to put it than it just kinda happened. It's funny coming from me because I'm always way too shy to just ask someone out but I feel like the only way to see how they feel is ask. Sorry that I can't be much help. I know it's all sorted now, you had the courage to mention it to them which I do admire and while it might not have been the result you wanted, you've still got a friend with is a great thing to have. This does seem to be a question a lot of people would ask though, so there's my two cents on it, even if I'm not the best on advice on that subject. If there were no other signs I wouldn't give too much thought to it. Not everyone is comfortable with this so do tell him (or anyone else that does it) if it makes you feel uncomfortable.
