Hi Ava,

I'm so sorry you're having to go through this. Let me be the first to tell you that it's natural to want to explore your sexuality and most people admit to sending a naked selfie/video at some point. What isn't okay, is this guy violating your trust and using something so personal to torment you. If you are in the UK/USA, it is important to report this to the police as a matter of urgency. What he has done is against the law and will be taken seriously. Please do not be embarrassed and please do not avoid reporting it.

Given the urgency of your situation, I will follow up with additional advice below.

Hi Ava,

It's me again. In addition to reporting it to the Police, there are also 2 organisations you can speak to who specialise in revenge porn.

In the USA - The End Revenge Porn Crisis Line: 1-844-878-2274

In the UK - The Revenge Porn Helpline: 0345 6000 459

In addition, we also have some top tips on things you can do in addition to reporting it here: https://www.ditchthelabel.org/what-to-do-when-your-naked-selfie-leaks/.

Above all Ava, please, please, please do not think that you are alone. What has happened to you is wrong and there are thousands of others. Thankfully, the law is on your side - so please use it. Once you have reported this to the Police, please let me know how you get on. Just remember to not share any personal information about you or the person who has done this to you.

I'm sending you positive energy. This will pass. I can imagine how you must be feeling right now, but you have done nothing wrong and this guy will be punished for what he has done to you. Nobody deserves to have their trust violated and I am sorry that this has happened to you. Do you feel comfortable talking about this with your parents? I can help with that if you'd like?

Hi Ava,

Despite not having possession of the video - you are still fine to report this to the cops and I would encourage you do it sooner rather than later. I know it's tough, but if you don't - there's a strong chance this will carry on and he may even go on to do it to other people too. Unfortunately revenge porn is all too common, so the Police are specifically trained and well experienced at dealing with this issue.

Can I ask how old you were when you took the photos/videos?

Please do report this. I know how scared you must feel, but you mustn't. You have done nothing wrong and you have nothing to be ashamed of.

Hi Ava, I agree with Harper. You have nothing to be embarrassed about. Back in my day, we used to take nudes with Polaroid cameras and hide our faces to keep them anonymous in case they fell into the wrong hands. I felt really hot and confident, and made some polaroids for my boyfriend. At the time I was 17. This was in 1999. Later when I broke up with him, I made him give them all back. I still have them to look back on. The point of my story is, it is totally normal to explore these things. Nowadays with everything digital, things can get out if hand quickly, and anonymity is lacking. This guy completely breached your trust and you are not at fault here. Good luck and stay confident. He is wrong, not you!
