Issues at work

Hey guys,

Basically ive just started a new job... its been about a month now... I I really struggle with socialising and making friends. On the surface it seems like I'm confident and know what I'm doing but underneath I'm super sensitive, awkward and clueless.

The other day a customer came in and they had a complaint. I feel like I may have messed up because istead of remaining cool, calm and detached and handling it professionally I had a lapse in judgement and turned to mush (they were elderly and very gentle and soft spoken even though they were angry... they had tears in their eyes as they were explaining their frustrations). I ended up being very gentle with them and almost a bit too personal when reassuring them.

I feel like my colleagues had a bad reaction to it as they all kind of avoided me after and there was a strange atmosphere for the rest of the day and the next day.

I still don't really know what I did wrong. I'm scared because they might think that I was trying to manipulate this poor woman into not being mad when really I was just trying to be reassuring.

I don't know what to do. Please help

Hey@Peacelily

Thanks for explaining what happened. I'm one of the digital mentors at Ditch and it's my job to give advice to people who come to us for help :)

To be honest, it sounds like you handled the work situation really well. Sometimes, we just have to be more gentle with certain people. Treating people gently and reassuring them is also professional. Say if you saw someone at work treat a customer in the same way in the same situation, what would you think? Also, what do you mean when you say too personal?
