Hey, I’m abi, My parents don’t understand my mental illness

If it’s a sunny day or we’re going out I am expected to be happy , I wish they could understand that a trip out or the weather will not make my mental illness magically disappear.

Hey @abirose

I can totally relate to you on this, my mum, whenever i'm struggling with my mental health, will often say well go for a run or "you have nothing to be sad about". I think sometimes it's a generational thing as there is so much misunderstanding about mental health. I know it can be exhausting trying to explain your mental health to your family over and over again. Could you try and share this article with them: https://www.ditchthelabel.org/what-not-to-say-to-a-depressed-person/.

Try not to rise to it and remember that just because they don't understand your mental health, does not make it invalid, you know how you feel so trust in that.

How are things going for you right now?

Thank you for the help, I hope the link will help my mum understand, I’m doing okay at the moment , a lot better than about a year ago, I’m trying to make positive changes in my life to improve my mental health and I think this organisation will really help I have good and bad days but seeing your reply has made my day much better.

Hey there @abirose

No problemo that's what we are here for. Did you get a chance to show your Mum the link??

I'm glad you are doing better than before, just remember how far you've come.

Yes, I sent it to her and at first I think she was offended but I think she’s becoming to understand a bit more, she had a meeting with my head of year at my school and I think that’s helped as well.

That's really good that you showed it to her and maybe she was just a bit shocked at first and then began to explain a little bit more as she did reach out to your head of year so it shows that she wants to be involved with you.

Hows your week been?

My week hasn’t been so great since I’ve been ill most of the time🤢 but I did go out with my mum and sister and we had a good time and all got alongSo mentally I’m doing okay at the moment.

Hey Abi,

Good to hear you are in an 'okay' place. Sometimes it's just about putting one foot in front of the other and carrying on is the best we can do.

Being ill sucks, make sure you are taking care of yourself!
